Chapter 15
After dinner, there was only one thing either of us wanted to do.
We sat on the couch and grabbed remote controls; it was Lego video game time.
I don’t know how most people play their video games, but for us it was a semi-loud event. I’d yell, and Beau would yell back, and we would both laugh our heads off.
It was a strangely out-of-character thing for both of us, all the yelling, but maybe that’s why we enjoyed it so much.
During one of our yelling sprees, I was calling out,
“GET THE MONEY! GET IT, BEAU!”
And he was yelling back,
“HELP ME!”
And when the money disappeared, we both busted up laughing.
“We’re stupid.” I laugh-cried, and Beau put his arm around me.
“Who cares, as long as we’re having fun?” he teased me. I yawned, killing my loud mood.
“Do you want an apple?” I checked, pausing the game and heading for the kitchen.
“No thanks.” Beau said, though he followed me. I grabbed an apple and sat down at the kitchen table, and Beau sat next to me.
We were quiet as I ate my apple. It was an effective way to calm down after the tense excitement of our gaming.
“Hey, Marley?” Beau asked. His voice was extra gentle, so I knew he was going to ask a question I might not want to answer. “Do you feel comfortable around me?”
“Yeah.” I said. I was a little surprised that out of all the questions in the world that was the one on his mind. “Why would you think I’m not?”
We had just been yelling at laughing about money, so to say I was confused would be an understatement. If that didn’t shout “COMFORT” than I didn’t know what would.
“Today when we were taking pictures, you didn’t seem like you even wanted me to kiss you.” He shrugged. “I want you to like me. Is that ridiculous?” he grimaced.
I dropped my apple on the counter, putting my hand on his arm.
“It’s not that I don’t feel comfortable or don’t want you. That’s not it at all.” I shook my head. “It’s just, I’m still trying to feel like myself again. If I ever don’t want you to kiss me, that’s the only reason. I’m still trying to find me inside all this… pain.” I put my hand over my heart.
“Did you ever think that maybe I can help you with that?” Beau’s words were soft, but I could tell that he meant them.
“I don’t know. Can you?” I whispered.
He took my arm and gently pulled me closer, sitting me down on his lap.
“If you’ll let me.” He promised, placing a rough hand against my cheek. I closed my eyes and leaned into his touch, letting myself feel the soft strength he offered. “I love you, Mar.” Beau’s voice grated against my ears in the gentlest of ways.
“I love you too.” I whispered, tilting my head down.
He lifted his face up to meet mine, and as our lips met, our mouths moved together as if they were one.
